Johannesburg Mayor Dr. Mpho Phalatse says she is ready to put the City of Johannesburg back to its rightful place.
The Mayor accompanied by members of the Mayoral committee held a media briefing on Wednesday 12 January, to outline the key priorities for the City of Johannesburg’s Multi Party Government for the short to medium term.
Phalatse says society needs to understand that there are business plans already in place which were approved before the financial year and those plans will need to be implemented.
“We also need to manage expectations because residents feel there is a new administration and things must change overnight, they don’t always understand the environment in which we work. There are business plans already in place that were approved before this financial year and those plans will need to be implemented until the end of the financial year which is 30 June. And there are budgets committed to those plans, we have to work within that frame work,” said Phalatse.
The mayor further says that Johannesburg is an economic hub and can’t afford to be without basic services.
According to the mayor her first priority is to ensure that Jobs are created, also on the list is access to clean water, electricity, roads that are tard and smooth.
“There’s a concern, if you google Johannesburg the first thing that comes up is, ‘is Johannesburg safe?’… And that for me is a big concern… Safety and security is another priority”, she added.
Phalatse says she is happy that the former chief of police is the MMC for safety, he knows Johannesburg and officers will be deployed to crime hotspots in the city to ensure the safety of residents.
