Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula has officially launched the once-off Covid-19 Taxi Relief Fund which is meant to ease the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the taxi industry.
The department has partnered with the National Empowerment Fund (NEF) to manage the disbursement
of the funds on behalf of the department.
According to the minister the once – off relief fund of R1,135 billion is intended to mitigate the negative financial impact of covid-19 on the taxi industry, without compensating for the loss of income, but rather
based on the principle of an ex gratia payment.
“Transport brings opportunities for the poor and it enables economies to be competitive, links
producers to markets, workers to jobs, students to schools and the sick to hospitals”, said Mbalula.
The minister further said the relief will be awarded to all minibus-taxi operators, metered taxis and e-hailing partners. Operators stand a chance to receive R5 000 from the fund.
The National Empowerment Fund has started accepting applications from
individuals’ operators, the application window will remain open until midnight of the
28th February 2022.
