The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has announced that it will hold a voter registration weekend on 18 and 19 September.
The Constitutional Court ruled against an application by the IEC to have the elections postponed from the 27th of October to February 2022. The Court said polls must go ahead between the 27th of October and the 1st of November.
“This registration weekend will offer all eligible citizens an opportunity to register or update their registration details. All the 23 151 voting stations will open from 08h00 until 17h00 on both days. The Commission urges young people, in particular, to take advantage of this opportunity to register and eventually, vote,” said IEC chairperson Glen Mashinini
The IEC says political parties will be able to register candidates for Local Government Elections. The Commission has amended a timetable for which those who failed to register will be able to do so.
Mashinini said the IEC had sent its preferred date for elections to Dlamini-Zuma for consideration.
The commission said it would issue a new election timetable once the election date has been announced.
