The New Nation Movement (NNM) says it is going to fight the election of Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula as the new Speaker of Parliament all the way to the Constitutional Court.
Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, who has been confirmed as the new National Assembly Speaker on Thursday, is under investigation for allegedly receiving a R5 million bribe from a defence contractor, blowing R7 million on aircraft charters and living it up at luxury hotels.
National Co-ordinator and Executive Director of the NNM, Bulelani Mkhohliswa, says they are disheartened by the appointment.
“We are quite disappointed at the fact that Parliament has not given our concern considerable time to engage with it,” he sais
According to Mkhohlisa they are cornced about Mapisa-Nqakula’s track record.
“We understand as well that a vacuum cannot be left for too long. As the speaker of parliament position is critical. So from here we will definitely engage with this matter further. Because one of the things we are picking up is that maybe the political parties are using a loophole that exists within the system. So, we want to challenge that in the highest court of the land, to the Constitutional Court.
It’s not a personal issue with her as a person, but we have an issue with her as a public representative in terms of her conduct and her track record. So what we’d love to see is a South African that is a public representative that protects the interests of the nation and advances the constitution of the land,” Explains Mhkhohlisa.
