The trio accused of murder in connection with last month’s unrest have abandoned their bail application in the Verulam Magistrate’s Court.
Dylan Govender, his brother Ned Govender and Jeetendra Jaikisoon are among 31 people arrested in connection with the deadly violence that happened in Phoenix last month.
Over 300 people died in the violent unrest in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng.
In the last appearance, their legal counsel withdrew from the case citing ethical reasons. The State is alleging that Jaikisoon killed an unarmed man during the unrest in Phoenix.
The NPA’s Natasha Kara said: “The three men who have been appearing in the Verulam Magistrates Court for murder and/or attempted murder have advised the court via their legal representatives that they will be abandoning their application for bail.
Police Minister, Bheki Cele announced that the number of people behind bars currently stands at 31.
“We expect the number to grow, when it comes to the people that are regarded as instigators the figure has remained 12, but that figure does not end there because there are many that have been identified and police are identifying more people going forward,” said Cele.
The trio will remain in custody. The matter is postponed to 13 September 2021 for further investigations
