Gauteng Basic Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi says five general workers have been suspended with Immediate effect at Khensani Primary School in Soshanguve north of Pretoria.
This comes after an investigation into the alleged rape of a six-year-old grade 1 pupil at the school.
Lesufi visited the school on Thursday afternoon for a brief meeting with the school management. He will also meet with the victim’s parents.
“The report only came on Wednesday. So there’s one aspect that I want to satisfy myself with. It is within that context that when I leave here I’m going to meet with the parents of the child. So that we can get that aspect cleared. I have requested the police to with speed. They’ve indicated that they’re at the stage where they want to conduct what we call identity parade,” said Lesufi
It is alleged that the child was relieving herself in the toilet during school hours when a man believed to be a general worker allegedly raped her.
Lesufi said one volunteer has never reported for duty ever since the incident happened, he requested police to follow up on the matter
“We have to learn from history, we had a case in Soweto where a security guard was alleged to have sexually harassed over 25 learners we lost that case because of the shallow investigation and reporting and the court could not agree with us. Up until that day I still feel like we failed those learners, so I don’t want to add this learner to the list,” added Lesufi.
The child is receiving counselling from the department’s team of social workers.
