North West health officials who allegedly withheld vaccines from black patients have been suspended
The North West Health Department has suspended three senior officials at its Tswaing sub-district office in Delareyville, including a sub-district manager according to SABC News.
It is reported that the officials allegedly deliberately withheld vaccines from black patients at a local vaccination site, saying they were out of stock and vaccines were given to white community members.
Departmental Spokesperson, Tebogo Lekgethwane, says the department is of the view there was segregation because the vaccines were available at the said sub-district.
“The department is of the view that this was segregation because the vaccines there have been available at the said sub-district. In terms of the public service regulations, the officials have been suspended,” says Lekgethwane.
Patrick Makhafane, the National Education, Health and Allied Workers’ Union (NEHAWU) secretary in North West, said he agrees with the province’s view on the matter.
“When people cannot get vaccination on the basis of their colour, it’s a very serious matter to us,” said Makhafane.
