The South African Police Service says they are investigating a video showing two police officers manhandling a schoolgirl.
This is a after a 30-second video clip of a police officer manhandling a school girl made rounds on social media. The incident happed in Krugersdorp, Gauteng.
On the video a man dressed in police uniform is seen dragging a girl dressed in school uniform towards the vehicle. She manages to briefly break free but the man is undeterred and eventually lifts her and wrestles her to the backseat on the passenger side of the vehicle.
The department said the incident is receiving attention from the police commissioner’s office.
Gauteng police spokesperson Noxolo Kweza says the departmental investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident is underway.
“At this stage, it has been established that the 18-year old female learner was indeed taken to the Krugersdorp police station and subsequently released on the same day, unharmed, into the care of her mother,” said Kweza.
According to Kweza the members captured on the video have been identified and the departmental investigation is underway.
“We can confirm that the vehicle captured on the video is a state vehicle and that the members were on duty conducting routine patrols at the time of the incident…Whatever measures that will be taken, will be guided by the outcome of the investigation, added Kweza.
