The Executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg, Geoffrey Makhubo was laid to rest at the Westpark Cemetery in Johannesburg on Wednesday.
Mayor Makhubo (53), died on Friday last week due to COVID-19 related complications.
He had served as the African Nation Congress’ treasurer and later as an MMC responsible for Finance in the City of Johannesburg. In December 2019 he was elected Executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg.
In keeping with Level 4 COVID-19 lockdown regulations, a small number of people attended the late mayor’s funeral. Some joined in using social media platforms.
President Cyril Ramaphosa has described the passing of City of Johannesburg Executive Mayor Geoff Makhubo as a loss to the City of Johannesburg and the province at large.
MEC Sizakele Nkosi-Malobane said that he was a true servant of the people and those who were privileged to know him can attest to his commitment to improving the lives of others.
Gauteng premier David Makhura said that Makhubo’s legacy will live through his family and friends, as well as within the ANC and the communities in which he worked.
His daughter Relebohile broke down in tears when she paid tribute to her father.
“I will remember you for everything you have given me. And I will love you forever” she said.
