President Cyril Ramaphosa addressed the nation on Monday amid the violence happening in the country.
This is after mass lootings, the burning of buildings as well as violent clashes between protesters and law enforcement spiraled out of control.
The unrest is believed to have been sparked by Former president Jacob Zuma supporters following the former head of state’s arrest.
Ramaphosa said the poor will be the biggest victims of the destruction.
“This violence may have roots in political reasons. There may have been some who sought to agitate along ethnic lines. What we are seeing now is opportunistic crime. This is not political cause that cannot justify the violence we have seen,” said Ramahosa
The president also mentioned that the government had to stop the vaccination programme just when it was gaining momentum and this will affect the economic recovery.
“We are mobilising all available capabilities to restore order. I have authorised the deployment of SANDF personnel to support SAPS
We will take action to secure every person against intimidation, violence, theft and looting. We will not hesitate to address and prosecute. They will face the full might of the law. This is a clear instruction I have given our security personnel. We will restore calm,” he said.
He called for peace and unity amid destructive protests happening in South Africa.
