Star-studded England got-off to their dream start in the 2020 UEFA EURO Championship, showing an eye-catching performance against 2018 FIFA World Cup finalists, Croatia.
It was definitely a day to remember for The Three Lions as it was the first-time winning their opening game at a European Championship.
According to Independent, former Manchester United defender Gary Neville had a lot of praise for England’s opening match and Southgate’s shock selection.
“I don’t think there is one person in our population of 65m who would have picked that team today. There were a lot of things today that l would have said historically went against England such as a two o’clock kick-off, the heat, a team that passed us off the park in the last tournament, the best defender going into the game, and not playing his best team going into the game,” said the Former Red Devils defender.
England are yet to prove their critics wrong as they are to challenge their underachievers status with the likes of Raheem Sterling, Mason Mount, Harry Kane, and the highly-rated Phil Foden.
Manchester City starlet Raheem Sterling was by-far England best performer in their opening match against Croatia as the speedy winger scored the only goal of the match as England beat Croatia 1-0 at Wembley Stadium.
Sterling told the BBC that it has always been his dream to register his name in the scoring charts in a major competition at Wembley Stadium.
“At Wembley, I said I have to score! It’s great to finally do it,” said the 26-year-old.
England will go head-to-head with Scotland on June 18, 2021 at Wembley Stadium in their second match of Group D.
