The National Institute of Communicable Diseases (NICD) says South Africa has now entered the third wave of the coronavirus pandemic.
The NICD said 9 149 new cases of the coronavirus have occurred in the latest reporting period, which means the case positivity rate stands at 15.7%; more than three times what is considered acceptable.
Health Director-General, Sandile Buthelezi, says this is the highest number since mid-January.
According to the latest reports a total of 58 322 tests were conducted in the last 24 hrs, with 9 149 new cases, which shows a 15.7% positivity rate.
Health expert, Professor Salim Abdool Karim said the rate of new Covid-19 infections is concerning.
“The real current rate of infections is probably twice what is being reported,” said Karim.
He further said it’s up to ordinary people to assist in slowing the spread of the coronavirus by wearing masks, washing hands and practicing social distancing.
