Article by: Ntando Mcube

After failing to appear in several court cases over tax related issues, Musician Bulelwa “Zahara” Mkutukana has allegedly been found guilty of contempt of court. The South African Revenue Service (SARS) brought forward a case against the Imali hitmaker. She apparently failed to appear in several court dates which then led to a warrant of her arrest which was issued in April.

According to an article by TshisaLive, the songstress handed herself over at the police station as she had a warrant of arrest pressing her. TshisaLive reports that on Monday, 7 June, Zahara handed herself over at the police station and also appeared at the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court. The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), confirmed to the publication that Zahara was charged for apparently failing to submit her personal income tax returns as well as that of her company Zahara Trading (Pty) Ltd.

Phindi Mjonondwane from the NPA, told the paper that the musician didn’t give enough reasons as to why she failed to appear in court hence the fine of R1500 or 3 months imprisonment.

The musician was expected to  hand over her passport and also make way to the Roodepoort police station, Tuesdays and Thursdays with a warning to attend her next upcoming court appearance.

The Imali hitmaker is just the latest celebrity to battle with SARS. Zahara will be back in court on the 25th of June for the disclosure of the docket for the SARS tax return case.

According to other news reports, Zodwa Wabantu had to return her 10 million rand Lamborghini after a call from SARS. While Rapper AKA, allegedly had his home and cars taken by the revenue service. Super Mega allegedly owed SARS more than R350 000, according to Sunday world.

Rapper Cassper also found himself in hot water with SARS, he shared on Somizi’s show that he owed SARS 12.9 million and mentions that the event went to Samsung. On other reports, it stated that he owed SARS R3.6 million. The rapper is one of the company’s ambassadors and he said SARS thought he even bought a private jet.
