South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has placed Health Minister, Dr Zweli Mkhize, on special leave.
Mkhize is implicated in the issuing of an irregular contract to communications company Digital Vibes worth R150-million. Digital Vibes is run by two of Mkhize’s close associates.
The Daily Maverick had previously reported that the company had made payments for repairs to a house owned by a trust in Mkhize’s name. There was also a cash payment from Digital Vibes to his son and a car bought in his name.
In a statement released on Tuesday afternoon, the Presidency said the special leave period “will enable the Minister to attend to allegations and investigations concerning contracts between the Department of Health and a service provider, Digital Vibes”.
Special Investigating Unit, (SIU) is currently investigating the R150 million contract.
Minister of Tourism, Mmamoloko Kubayi-Ngubane, will serve as the Acting Minister of Health.
