The Hawks have arrested an alleged gold at OR Tambo International Airport after he was found in possession of 23 pieces of gold worth an estimated R11 million.
The preliminary investigation by the Hawks revealed that the 33 year old suspect travelled from Harare, Zimbabwe to Johannesburg, South Africa.
According to Hawks spokesperson Philani Nkwalase, the suspect was arrested by the Hawks’ serious organized crime unit.
Nkwalase said the man was requested to scan his luggage at the international arrivals Customs section of the South African Revenue Service. Twenty-three pieces of gold were allegedly found on his luggage.
“He allegedly failed to declare any items and did not have any permits or licenses to be in possession or transport gold and the Hawks were called to effect the arrest and further investigation,” Said Nkwalase.
The 23 pieces of gold worth R11 million were seized for further investigation.
The suspect is charged with contravening the Customs Act 91 of 1964 and Precious Metals Act 37 of 2005.
