The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) calls for a travel ban against India due to the Covid-19 B.1.617 variant discovered in the country
The variant found in India has been attributed to record high deaths and transmissions, so far infections in the country passed the 20 million mark.
EFF spokesperson Vuyani Pambo says the government must follow global trends of the virus and act accordingly to protect the lives of South Africans.
“Their lack of a response and necessary policy intervention to ensure the variant that exists in India does not spread in South Africa, is no different from their childish response in March 2020, when they refused to utilise state resources to quarantine the 11 passengers from Italy, and opted to allow them to self-quarantine,” Said Pambo
Health Minister Zweli Mkhize reported that three travelers from India who arrived at King Shaka Airport tested positive for Covid-19.
The ministry has assured South Africans that there are no direct flights from India to South Africa and authorities are maintaining strict measures to try and ensure that new variants of the virus do not enter the country.
