The Minister of Social Development, Lindiwe Zulu has filed in a request to treasury for the extension of the R350 COVID-19 relief grant.
South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) had extended the special COVID-19 grant for another three months in February 2021.
#PayTheGrants, alongside Black Sash, the Institute for Economic Justice, the C19 People’s Coalition and other organisations, held a demonstration at Delft Mall and in Blikkiesdorp, Delft, on Freedom Day, as part of a nationwide protest against stopping the COVID-19 relief fund.
Organizations also called on the department of social development to extend further with a payout increase.
“We are conscious of the fact that we are not the only ones looking for finance from Treasury. We are hoping that when they look at the issue they may look around maybe find the money and continue with it.” Said Zulu.
The relief grant will be coming to an end month end of April.
