Man appears in court for Cape Town fires

A man arrested in connection with allegedly starting a fire on Table Mountain made a brief appearance in the Cape Town magistrate’s court on Tuesday.

The fires, which started on Sunday, continues to burn with firefighters trying their best to put it out.

The 35 year old Tanzanian national is charged with arson.

He was arrested on Monday and has been remanded in custody until his next court appearance

According to his attorney, Shagan Barlram the 35 year old man is innocent.

“My client says he resides in the level part of table mountain, near to where the fire was and started he is not guilty of the charges brought against him” said the attorney.

The matter has been postponed for 7 days for further investigations. The case will resume on the 28th of April.

Meanwhile, South Africa National Parks (SANParks) says approximately 90% of the fire was contained by Tuesday morning, while at least 600 hectares of land is burnt.
