The South African police authorities have seized thousands of fake vaccines at a warehouse in Germiston, Gauteng.
International policing authority Interpol said about 400 ampoules — equivalent to around 2,400 doses — containing the fake vaccine were found at the Germiston warehouse.
Police also recovered a large quantity of fake 3M masks and arrested three Chinese nationals and a Zambian national.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) said they were acting on the global warning issued by Interpol and more arrests are in the pipeline.
“Whilst we welcome this result, this is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to COVID-19 vaccine-related crime,” said Interpol Secretary General Jürgen Stock.
National police spokesperson Brenda Muridili said Gauteng organized-crime police received information that people were involved in the smuggling, storing and distributing of COVID-19 vaccines and a large quantity of counterfeit masks and unregistered vaccines were found.
Jürgen Stock said Interpol had warned that criminals will attack the distribution of COVID-19 vaccines, both on and offline.
