President Cyril Ramaphosa has delivered his address to the nation regarding the COVID-19 pandemic on Sunday evening.
The president announced a drop down lockdown level from Level 3 to Level 1.
Ramaphosa said that the vaccine rollout has gone extremely well.
“You have endured the greatest hardships, but you have remained resolute, united and hopeful,” said Ramaphosa.
Here’s what Alert Level 1 means:
The hours of the curfew will now be from 12 midnight to 4am.
Gatherings will be allowed but must be limited to 100 people indoors and 250 people outdoors.
Night vigils after funerals are still not permitted.
Alcohol sales are allowed in normal trading hours but are not allowed during curfew hours.
Five airports will be open.
“Only five airports will be open for international travel with standard infection control measures. These are OR Tambo, Cape Town, King Shaka, Kruger Mpumalanga and Lanseria airports.” Said Ramaposa.
Ramaphosa said South Africa has secured 11 million COVID-19 vaccine doses with Johnson & Johnson.
Over 67 000 healthcare workers have already been vaccinated.
“We have also secured 20 million doses from Pfizer, which will be delivered from the second quarter, we have secured 12 million vaccine doses from the COVAX facility and are in the process of finalising our dose allocation from the African Union,” stated Ramphosa.
The President said South Africa has clearly emerged from the second wave of the coronavirus.
