The minister of social development Lindiwe Zulu said the R350 Covid-19 grant will cost government R22 billion by the end of May.
Minister Zulu was briefing the media on the departmental measures to implement the mitigation of the impact of covid-19 to the most vulnerable citizens of South Africa on Friday.
Zulu said about six million beneficiaries in the country receive the R350 Covid-19 grant every month.
“The department has spent over R17 billion thus far on the grant, benefiting those in need of direct income,” said Zulu.
According to the minister the department anticipates that they would have spent over R22 billion to support this group of beneficiaries by the end of May.
President Cyril Ramaphosa announced that the covid-19 relief fund will be extended by three months during his State of the Nation Address.
Zulu said since the announcement of extension by Ramaphosa, 66 000 new applications have been received by the Department of Social Development.
