Minister of Correctional Services Ronald Lamola has announced the matric 2020 results at the Leeuwkop Prison on Thursday.
The minister was joined by the Gauteng MEC of education Panyaza Lesufi during the announcement.
For the 2020 academic year, a total of 160 inmates wrote their matric exams. According to Lamola the 2020 inmate matric pass rate for full-time students has increased to 86.3%.
He said the education of inmates was also affected and faced various challenges when our country was placed under lockdown in March 2020.
Lamola said part-time students achieved an 81.3% pass rate.
“This is higher than the national average of 76.2%, it is also higher than the highest provincial percentage of 85.1 attained by the Free State,” said Lamola.
“Our best performing learner is Lwazi Chamane from Usethubeni Youth under Durban Management Area in Kwa-Zulu Natal with an average of 80.6% and four distinctions,” said Lamola.
The minister of said inmate learners achieved a total of 76 distinctions and 78 bachelor passes.
“We will continue to provide opportunities for inmates to complete high school education and go further to pursue tertiary education with institutions of higher learning if their families can afford to sponsor their studies,” said Lamola.
This is the highest pass rate as per the inmate performance trend.
