The Minister of Arts and Culture Nathi Mthethwa has approved a number of geographical name changes.
The city of Port Elizabeth’s name has changed to Gqeberha.
The new name was submitted by Boy Lamani of KwaMagxaki, who said that Gqeberha was the isiXhosa name for Walmer Township, one of the first and oldest Port Elizabeth townships.
The town of Uitenhage, changes to Kariega; and the Port Elizabeth airport will now be known as the Chief Dawid Stuurman International Airport.
The East London Airport name will change to the King Phalo Airport.
The new name for Port Elizabeth Gqeberha has divided social media users. Some social media users say there was no need to change the name to Gqeberha while others are happy with the name change.
Other name changes that were approved by Minister Mthethwa:
Berlin will be changed to Ntabozuko.
MaClear Town will change to Nqanqarhu.
King Williams Town will change to Qonce.
