President Cyril Ramaphosa announced the extension of Covid-19 R350 special grant for another 3 months.
This will be the second extension. The grants lapsed at the end of January.
The grant has at least 22 million recipients across the country.
Ramaphosa said he understood the dire implications of the coronavirus lockdown on the marginalized groups.
“We have therefore decided to extend the period for the Special COVID-19 Grant of R350 by a further three months. This has proven to be an effective and efficient short-term measure to reduce the immediate impact on the livelihoods of poor South Africans.” Said Ramaphosa.
The president also announced the extension of the Temporary Employee Relief Scheme (TERS).
“We have also decided to extend the Covid-19 TERS benefit until 15 March 2021 only for those sectors that have not been able to operate,” added Ramaphosa.
South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) said current recipients of the Covid-19 grant don’t need to re-apply in order to receive their money.
