The award winning jazz artist, musician, songwriter and producer has died at the age of 83.
President Cyril Ramaphosa has conveyed his condolences to Gwangwa’s family, friends and colleagues in a tweet.
“Jonas Gwanga ascends to our great orchestra of musical ancestors whose creative genius and dedication to the freedom of all South Africans inspired millions in our country and mobilized the international community against the apartheid system,” said President Ramaphosa.
Jonas Gwangwa’s death falls on the third anniversary of Hugh Masekela and Oliver Mtukudzi’s death.
The news of his passing comes just after the loss of another legend in the arts, Dr Sam Phillips.
Gwangwa’s wife passed away two weeks before his death.
Messages of condolences are pouring in on social media for the family and friends of Mr Gwangwa.
