The Transport Department released the 2020 festive season road statistics on Friday.
Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula said the number of fatalities on the roads this festive season saw a decline of 7% with 1,448 deaths recorded.
“Despite challenging caused by COVID-19, our law enforcement officers were out in full force and conducted 2 937 roadblocks, a total number of 4 144 motorists were arrested for offences that include driving under the influence of alcohol, false documents, speeding and violation of operating permits” explained Mbalula.
The minister said, there was a decline in the number of pedestrians who died on the road, however driver and passenger fatalities increased.
Mpumalanga is the only province that recorded an increase of fatalities, the province recorded a 4.4% increase compared to last year.
“0% Alcohol is coming your way this year, it’s no longer going to be 0.5%. Meaning when you get into your car you must be sober. This is the year where we tighten the screws,” said Mbalula.
Mbalula said to avoid corruption body cameras are going to be used. Every officer on the road will be required to wear a body camera, and removal of the camera will be a punishable offence.
