ACCOUNTABILITY AT THE HEART OF TRUST

As calls come in from different liquor stakeholders on government to ease restrictions on alcohol, Health Minister Zweli Mkhize says the ban of alcohol should be continued.
Minister Mkhize said the ban of alcohol has helped put less pressure on the health care system and opened facilities for COVID-19 patients, also stating that it was decreasing alcohol-related trauma cases.
Various stakeholders in the alcohol industry said they support the measures put in place by the government to curb the spread of COVID-19 but also urged the government to rethink its legislation on alcohol sales, because they are struggling to keep afloat.
According to Mkhize, now is not the right time to lift the ban.
“Hopefully, that’s going to continue for a while that we get this space to be able to manage people who are under the pressure of COVID-19, so we will then continue to monitor the situation and see when there would be the need to change the restrictions that have been put in place.” Added Mkhize.
