This weekend marks the return of the world class Motorsport event the Kayalami 9 Hour , hosted by International GT Challenge.
The Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit will once again return to glory by bringing car enthusiasts and petrol heads to the South African leg of the Intercontinental GT Challenge powered by Pirelli for the Kyalami 9 hour 2020 challenge.
The outbreak of Covid-19 has however dealt fans a losing hand for the attendance of this years event. Due to the stringent precautionary measures put into place, in the attempt to prevent the spread of Covid-19, the event will not be open to the public but will be available to watch and stream on all major African channels and social media platforms.
The Kyalami 9 Hours made a welcome return to motorsport after 37 years of absence, joining the Liqui-Moly Bathurst 12 Hour, Suzuka 10 Hours, California 8 Hours and Total 24 Hours of Spa for the Intercontinental GT Challenge (IGTC) series.
“I spent years trying to get this African leg of the series off the ground. To have finally locked it in is a massive achievement and one that I am absolutely delighted about,” – SRO/ Intercontinental GT Challenge Boss Stephanie Ratel.
“Having an African part of this championship in 2019 meant that we were now across five continents, a truly a global event. Last year’s 9 Hour was an incredible success that re-established Kyalami’s place on the international motorsport map.
The much anticipated; Season-ending Intercontinental GT Challenge will be broadcast on Supersport, YouTube and other African Media Channels.
This year will see Three manufacturers and nine driver crews battle it out for the Intercontinental GT Challenge Powered by Pirelli title.
Reigning champions Porsche are bidding to defend both crowns with two all-star line-ups that include drivers’ championship leaders Earl Bamber and Laurens Vanthoor. Audi — champions in 2016-2018 — and BMW can still deny Porsche back-to-back manufacturers’ titles, while any one of five different marques could yet secure drivers’ honours.
Prospective dates for the 2021 Kayalami9Hour have also been announced.
