Article by: Lerato Moloi

The Department of Social Development has this afternoon officially announced, the cut off date for appeals and payments for the Covid-19 Special Grant, which has been set for February 15, 2021.

The announcement was made by Social Development Minister, Lindiwe Zulu during a media briefing this afternoon that is held alongside all Department of Social Development Provincial MECs.

Following the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic in South Africa, the government introduced a relief measure to support unemployed citizens during the lockdown period.

The Special COVID-19 Social Relief of Distress amount is R350 per month, from the date it is approved. The grant will only be paid for a period from May until October. However, if applicants only apply in July, they will be paid from the month in which they apply – there will be no backpay. “South African Government”
