City of Johannesburg recently posted on social media and announced a R10 million project of installing 590 street lights across the streets of Johannesburg to protect women and children at night. The response from the public has been negative and they demand explanations as to how exactly the street lights will be protecting our mothers, sisters and children.
The implementation of this project is allegedly meant to help fight and decrease the GBV rate in our country.
MMC Moerane stated that “We are in the 16 Days Of Activism against GBV, where women get raped at night in the dark alleys where there are no streetlights. So it’s not only about making sure that there are lights but making sure that we act to protect our residents”
