National Education, Health and Allied Workers Union (NEHAWU) and its members have embarked on a nationwide strike this morning.
The purpose of the strike is to compel the Department of Heath to recognize community health workers, and offer them permanent employment – including government benefits.
NEHAWU spokesperson, Khaya Xaba, says the union plans to deliver their memorandums to eight provincial districts healthcare offices, excluding Gauteng.
“These workers have been patient enough with the government and we feel it’s about time they are taken seriously,” Xaba said.
The Department of Health is given seven days to respond to their demands, or according to Xaba, they’ll face the consequences of the workers downing tools during a pandemic.
