ACCOUNTABILITY AT THE HEART OF TRUST
Brackenfell High School in Cape Town is accused of turning a blind eye against racism by former and current students, who feel silenced by the school’s lack of accountability when racism is reported.
According to a matric pupil, it is a norm for the school not to reprimand fellow pupils and teachers when they behave in a racist way.
In June, the past and present students of Brackenfell High submitted a formal memorandum addressing their experiences with discrimination and racism at the school.
The memorandum was formally given to the principal, school governing body chairperson as well as the staff on the 8th of July 2020.
According to an Instagram account @Bhstories – that was created 4 months prior to the racism protest – an audio recording of the meeting is available.
Former and present students have created a portal to submit their experiences of racism at the school and how the principal, SGB and teachers blatantly turn a blind eye on racism and discrimination.
