ACCOUNTABILITY AT THE HEART OF TRUST
A woman has been arrested in Ekhuruleni after she was busted for operating two illegal medical practices in Springs, Gauteng.
According to Health Professionals Council of SA (HPCSA), Ms Sonnet Mari Brand was allegedly giving out prescriptions to patients – illegally.
In a joint collaboration between the Springs police and East Cluster Crime Intelligence, an inspection was conducted at Ms Brand’s practice and it was discovered that she was practicing as a pulmonologist specialist without any qualifications and she wasn’t registered with the council.
However, both practices have subsequently shut down. Ms Brand stated that she had been performing consulting work at the Far East Rand Hospital and conducting house calls after hours. Ms Brand was arrested for contravening Section 17(1)(a) as well as Section 40 of the Health Professions Act. She is scheduled to appear soon,” – HPCSA’s Priscilla Sekhonyana said.
Sekhonyana also urges the community to work with the authorities by reporting all suspicious illegal practices that may be run by unregistered people.
