“Jerusalema”, which was one of the chart-topping hits for 2019, unfortunately did not receive an award at the South African Music Awards (SAMAs) 2020.
People across the globe have taken to Social media, to share videos of their participation in the #JerusalemaDanceChallenge, where they collectively dance to the South African produced song, “Jerusalema” by Master KG.
Social media users across the world, have expressed how the song has provided much-needed positivity and has ignited a global unity amid the coronavirus pandemic.
According to Wikipedia “Jerusalema” is a song by South African DJ and record producer Master KG featuring South African vocalist Nomcebo Zikode. The upbeat gospel-influenced house song was initially released on 29 November 2019 after it garnered positive response online, with a music video following on 21 December. It was later included on Master KG’s second album of the same title, released in January 2020. It was eventually released on streaming services on 10 July 2020, after it went viral during mid-2020, garnering international reaction due to the #JerusalemaChallenge. With success of-course comes criticism and hardships. Master KG has not been immune to the unwarranted negativity reigning from his very own country, South Africa.
The Criticism stems from Former DA Member, Politician and Former City of Joburg Mayor Mr.Hernan Mashaba.
Mashaba took to the Twitter streets, to express his disappointment in the participation of frontline workers in the Jerusalema Dance Challenge, which has been trending Worldwide. He expressed that in his view other countries are training their law enforcement officers to protect their citizens, whilst South African municipalities are instead training officials how to “Dance”.
That ofcourse didn’t go without a clap back from Jerusalema Hitmaker himself, Master KG.
The dance challenge has served as a vessel for solidarity for frontline workers, during the heart drenching times of Covid-19, not only in South Africa but across the world.
