The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Environmental Affairs has announced that members of the public will not be allowed to participate in the expected sardine run this year, as swimming is still prohibited under the the Covid-19 lockdown regulations as set out by the NCCC.
Meanwhile excitement is growing in KwaZulu-Natal among fishermen and among the public, that sardines could land on beaches this weekend.

According to the Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs, the department was briefed of a successful flight by the Sharks Board who spotted thin pockets of sardines between Warner Beach and Port Edward.
MEC Dube-Ncube in commentary said that in anticipation of the sardines arrival, the shark safety gear along the entire coastline of KZN had been lifted.
The departments spokesperson, Ndabezinhle Sibiya requested that all fishermen are to ensure that they have a valid permit at all times.
Sardines have been spotted at Port Edward on the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast, and are expected to make their way to the Durban coastline.
Last week, large concentrations of sardines were seen off the Eastern Cape Coast between East London and Mazeppa Bay, during winter colder sea temperatures schools of sardines move from the Agulhas Bank at the Southern Cape up the coast to KwaZulu-Natal.
